To my Teenager

Half stranger-

This body I once knew so well,

Small and chubby

Whose center of gravity made tumbles painless

if no less surprising;

this body

that climbed on top of me as if I were a laughing mountain,

pinched too hard and hugged just hard enough,

has grown taller and more complex,

shed off yet another crowded shell –

old cells replaced by new

as if to say “ Now I have created more of myself than you did. ”

If we have done wrong as a parents,

I hope it is true-

But if we have done well

Perhaps you will have room for us deep inside

Where you may carry us safely toward yet another generation.
