Poems about Teaching (The Bigger Classroom)

War continues-
Hunger;
Intolerance;
cheating ;
lying;
stealing;
killing -
history’s lessons, it seems, are more ephemeral
than our waste products,
though three have endured through constant repetition
by men and women in expensive suits
into banks of microphones
to the rhythmic clicking of cameras.

Some of my students have learned these by heart,
through rote memorization
the way we once learned our times tables:

Take credit for everything;
Responsibility for nothing,
and deny, deny, deny.
